This weekend we ventured back up to Charlotte and then to Rock Hill, SC to visit my sister and her family. We dropped the kids off with Mimi and Papa Friday evening, and then Steph and I drove down to sup with Jamie and Jeremy. After sampling the Glutton Free menu from Red Asia Bistro, we chilled out in anticipation for the race.
We arose early Saturday morning and prepped for the race. Brian & Emma showed up, and everyone got saddled up and we were off to the Rock Hill YMCA. We started off with the Fun Run and all the kids received medals for completion! Adults got to revel in satisfaction of completing the fun run
After a brief pause, we walked about a half-mile to the start for the 5k race, and it started pretty much right as we got there. Everybody had a great performance during the race. I think Jamie won the most-improved award having shaved several minutes off of her previous 5k time for a new PR (personal record). Steph got a new PR and shaved minutes off as well. Brian and I pretty much did repeat performances from our last 5k. Mimi, Papa and kids were there at the finish line to greet everybody.
The whole crew walked another mile or two to catch the Come See Me parade, We then adjourned to a nearby park were we had to ask the question, “Does a Devin poop in the woods?” We wrapped up with a “picnic lunch” back at Jamie and Jeremy’s house followed by naptimes. We got up and did a quick tour of the Catawba Native American Pow-Wow, which was being held at the Winthrop arena (last time I was there was to see Jamie graduate), and then off to Cuba for dinner!
Pictures? Why yes, as a matter of fact I do have some! Click on the picture below to check out the photo album.

No, I’m not talking about the Widespread Panic song that we play in our band, Hard Livin’, I’m talking about coconuts, from Sanibel! The kids wanted to collect coconuts before we left Grandma’s house, so we broke out the pole-mounted saw thingamabob (I believe that is the marketing term for it anyway) and cut down about 15 or so coconuts to haul back to Atlanta. Upon our arrival back home, I put the coconuts in a plastic bin in the garage to chill — it’s been around 35F at night, so the ‘nuts were plenty cold this morning. Out in the bush, I would use a machete to open the coconuts, but since I’m not the bushwhacking type I used power tools!
The first attempt at using a saws-all to open the coconut ended up in a mangled coconut, but it was drinkable.
For the second attempt, I used the saws-all to cut a flat bottom on the coconut, and then used my Joyce Chen kitchen cleaver, circa 1970s(?), to cleave the husk from around the nut. This method was much better, cleaner, and made it easy to pop the lid off of the exposed coconut. I had to hurry because I had some vultures waiting to drink up all the milk.
Once I cut the top off of the coconut, I dropped in a couple of straws, and the nut was snatched from my grasp with all haste as my offspring/vultures descended onto the coconut with the vigor of lions eating a zebra. Wow, I don’t know why I went off on the Creatures On Safari tangent there, but anyway, enjoy the rest of these pictures. As usual, click on the pix to view larger versions.

We’ve had the good fortune to spend the last few days in Sanibel with Mom on her birthday, and (great) Grandma on her 90th birthday. In addition, we were able to meet up with our old Ft. Myers/Cape Coral friends too! It was a great, short visit. We’ll be back soon. Click the picture below to review the photo album!
PS. Any folks with additional pictures to share, send them my way please!
