This guy dropped in for breakfast this morning. I heard him screeching while I was getting the kids ready. He was up in a tree spotting some groundmeat (chipmunk I think) and hopped down to have a nibble.

I’ve slowly been accumulating lights and what not for decorating the house. We started a few years back with icicle lights, but I really really hate dislike storing them so we went for something else. We have a small Christmas tree and train out on the front deck with blue lights. Sorry Dad, but I told you 20 years ago that I was gonna have blue lights at Christmas and now here they are! Devin and Maya, along with the rest of the preschool class, presented some songs today. Enjoy! Click photos for enlarged versions.
And, what sort of Dad would I be if I didn’t have some video? I apologize in advance for the rather poor image quality; I had the Flip set on zoom mode. The Flip’s zoom is mostly garbage, unfortunately.

Our church Christmas Party was held last weekend and it was a great time. We spent our time in the kid’s section, where there were plenty of crafts to be made, cookies to be iced and decorated, and snacks to be consumed. Santa even dropped by for a visit. Devin was tentative at first — content only to peek into the room where Santa was seated and watch the parade of children as they hopped up onto or dropped into Santa’s lap to whisper their hearts’ desires. Eventually he worked up enough courage to be seated in the same room as Santa, and here’s what we got out of that (click for large version):
As you might notice, Maya is conspicuously absent. She is having nothing to do with Santa at the moment. Who knows, perhaps next week she’ll warm up to him. Thanks to Anne Park for donating her photographic talent, and for giving out free images suitable for 4×6 printing! She does great work.

Of course school picture days are the bane of many a student, however these two students are as cute as can be! Click on the pictures for larger versions.

I have a dual monitor setup in the workspace. This allows me to expand my computational work surface. It also allows me to work on one screen and let one of my kids, Devin in the case, enjoy something on the other. I present the following:

No, I’m not talking about Dwayne Johnson, I’m talking about rocks, as in boulders. Actually, I’m not really talking about those either. I’m specifically talking about climbing indoor rock walls. Earlier in November I took the kids to Escalade Climbing Gym for some fun. I know my twinkles are fans of climbing (as are most kids — go figure) so I thought this would be a fun getaway to give Steph some free time to herself.
Escalade has a nice setup inside. I’m a novice when it comes to climbing, so I can’t give you all the technical details of their specific environment, so I invite you to check out their website.
All in all, the twinkles had a good time. Neither was too interested in the tethered climbing, but both loved free climbing up the kiddie wall. Check the pictures below; click for larger versions. I also have a snazzy movie of the twinkles in action.

In the days of yore, when my grandparents still lived in Illinois, we used to have an annual convergence around Thanksgiving in Tennessee. Here, amid the Great Smoky Mountains, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Pigeon Forge, and Dollywood, is nestled the tiny ville of Gatlinburg, a sleepy town that plays host to hundreds of thousands of people each year. I’m guessing, really, on that number, but basically, it’s a big tourist-attraction area in the mountains. It was a convenient place for a family reunion since my grandparents were in Illinois, my uncle’s family was in Memphis, and the rest of us around Charlotte.
My parents, now grandparents, sought to rekindle this sort of family reunion escapade by sponsoring our first annual Thanksgiving outing at Great Wolf Lodge in Concord, a sleepy town that plays host to hundreds of thousands of people each year. I’m guessing, really, on that number, but basically, it’s a bedroom community for Charlotte and also plays host to NASCAR fans. [Note: see that literary device I just used? Awesome!]
Great Wolf Lodge is a family-oriented indoor water park resort, and it is a fantastic place. The water park contains a kiddie splash pool, complete with a few small slides and spraying contraptions. There is a deeper pool that has a lily pad/rope bridge combo, and large floating islands. A wave pool with multiple wave styles adds to the mix, and this was by far the favorite betwixt the twinkles. In addition to the various pools, there is an array of water slides to suite all tastes: body-only slides that are good for 3 year olds up to adults, mat slides for the bigger kids and adults, and then the awesome innertube slides for the adventurous (our favorite: the Howlin’ Tornado).
In addition to the water park there is also an on-premises spa, restaurant, arcade and various activities hosted by the resort. The best part? The rooms. They have various room types that include kid-oriented “cabins” which are carved-out niches to house multiple kids in a separated space that looks like a log cabin en-suite. My parents were gracious/crazy enough to host all the grandkids in their cabin suite while the adults got to hang out and party. Did I mention they have an on-site MagiQuest? It’s basically a huge scavenger hunt/adventure/questing-type game that is suitable for *ahem* kids of all ages. [Note: if you're still into the whole Gatlinburg thing, there is a MagiQuest in Pigeon Forge.] Thanks to Jeremy for dragging me into it; I was able to get in a good work out running up and down 3 flights of stairs all morning.
We culminated our stay at the lodge with a trip to the Beef Jerky Outlet store. Yeah, that’s right, a jerky outlet. I sampled kangaroo, alligator, ostrich, beef and turkey jerkies. And, they carry hot sauces, which I also sampled. I tried a 4-million scoville hot sauce, and it wasn’t that bad. Sweet on the front, and all fire in the rear.
All in all, we had a fantastic time at Great Wolf Lodge with our family, and we’re ready to do it again next year!
Other Thanksgiving festivities included painting and plumbing in the basement remodel at my parent’s house. Steph got to work on finishing the painting in the kid room and bedroom, while Dad and I worked on plumbing PEX for the toilet, sink and whirlpool tub. We were smart and used Sharkbite connectors for PEX-to-PEX and PEX-to-Copper connections. I missed the opportunity to practice sweating and soldering as we were supposed to add on a copper down tube from the whirlpool faucet… oh well. Overall I was pleased with the PEX application; that stuff is awesome!

I was alerted last night by my lovely wife that I have neglected to post recently pictures on the blog, resorting instead to Twitter. I do apologize for that oversight, as I know some of my dear readers are not on/into/down with Twitter. So, without further delay, I present the following.
