This weekend we ventured back up to Charlotte and then to Rock Hill, SC to visit my sister and her family. We dropped the kids off with Mimi and Papa Friday evening, and then Steph and I drove down to sup with Jamie and Jeremy. After sampling the Glutton Free menu from Red Asia Bistro, we chilled out in anticipation for the race.
We arose early Saturday morning and prepped for the race. Brian & Emma showed up, and everyone got saddled up and we were off to the Rock Hill YMCA. We started off with the Fun Run and all the kids received medals for completion! Adults got to revel in satisfaction of completing the fun run
After a brief pause, we walked about a half-mile to the start for the 5k race, and it started pretty much right as we got there. Everybody had a great performance during the race. I think Jamie won the most-improved award having shaved several minutes off of her previous 5k time for a new PR (personal record). Steph got a new PR and shaved minutes off as well. Brian and I pretty much did repeat performances from our last 5k. Mimi, Papa and kids were there at the finish line to greet everybody.
The whole crew walked another mile or two to catch the Come See Me parade, We then adjourned to a nearby park were we had to ask the question, “Does a Devin poop in the woods?” We wrapped up with a “picnic lunch” back at Jamie and Jeremy’s house followed by naptimes. We got up and did a quick tour of the Catawba Native American Pow-Wow, which was being held at the Winthrop arena (last time I was there was to see Jamie graduate), and then off to Cuba for dinner!
Pictures? Why yes, as a matter of fact I do have some! Click on the picture below to check out the photo album.

I took a few minutes during lunch today to clarify, crop, caption and clean up the photo library my Wildlife at Tritt Springs photo album. There are a few newcomers that I haven’t identified yet, so proceed with all haste and help me out!
Note: I’ve ordered the photos according to the subject – e.g. all the Tufted Titmice will appear together in the library, but I noticed that the order didn’t translate to the online album. I’ll work that out soon.

Devin and Maya appear to be summoning up a leviathan from the depths of the Gulf of Mexico, but really they’re just tossing shells into the water. Or are they?

As we continue to get ourselves unpacked (not even close), set up (sorta) and settled in (not really), I’ve taken some time out to prop up some wildlife feeders around the house. The previous owners were very much into birds, so I suppose that works out well for us as the critters might continue to forage for seed around the house. I placed two feeders outside of our front windows, which afford a fantastic view of the front yard and any visitors to the area. So far, I’ve identified several bird species, and we get the occasional chipmunk and squirrel as well. We might even have a chipmunk that’s burrowing in between a few rocks in the yard, but time will tell if that’s the case. Here’s a link to some pictures I’ve taken – if you’re a subscriber to Bird Fancy, why don’t you help me out in identifying some of the unknown species I have, will you? So far, I have pictures of a Tufted Titmouse, some type of Wren, American Robin, Black-Capped Chickadee, and an Eastern Chipmunk. There are a few unidentified wingers in there too. I’ve also seen, but not photographed, a few woodpeckers. That has been remedied by keeping a camera close at hand in the kitchen

If you’re a regular user of Picasa, you may have overlooked a newly-released feature of Picasa Web Albums. After you’ve marked and uploaded pictures to a web album, surf on over to Picasa’s web site. From there, look for the People tab and click it. Once there, you can look for the face tagging section on the right, and go through the process of identifying faces. For my albums, I had about 1300 faces that were identified in about 5 minutes or so.
After that, you start the identification process – which basically links identified faces to your Google account contacts. You can create a contact without any special information, just a name will do. You can also identify faces that weren’t automatically found by Picasa.
After about two hours, I successfully identified about 1100 of 1350 “faces”. Approximately 222 of the 1350 were either not faces (very few) or just people I didn’t care to identify (very many). You can share the name tags (make public), share some album’s names, or share none. Right now, I’ve left mine as public. Head on over and check it out. Maybe you’ll find yourself!

One year ago yesterday at 3:43 and 3:44 PM the most wonderful things to happen to our lives came into the world. Here’s a photo album from their 1st Birthday Party!

A “Tropical Wave” – or plainly put, a thunderstorm. In Trini, a tropical wave is one level below a tropical storm. The wave sends everyone scurrying for cover since a lot of the roads and areas in the southlands are prone to flash floods. On a side note, for lunch today we had Roti. More specifically, bosupsha, which is slang for “burst apart shit”. Normally a roti is a flat bread wound around a wad of protein or vegetable matter. A bosupsha is a side of flat bread, with the wad of protein or vegetable matter on a plate. Hence, burst apart shit.

A grove of trees in the hotel. Can you spot the yellow bellied sap sucker? Or it’s equivalent?

The view from my hotel room, overlooking Queen Ann Park. Off in the distance is Port of Spain bayside, and the Dragon’s Teeth.
The north side of Trinidad – just over the finger of land is Maracas Bay.
The second-highest peak in Trinidad, the name of which escapes me…
Just off the coast, far in the haze, you can almost not see Tobago.

I’ve just moved the blog to Blogger’s custom domain function, which means faster publishing and what-not. Just testing the Picasa->Blogger functionality.
What happens behind the scenes, if you’re interested to know: pictures are posted to an unlisted Picasa Web Album, which is quite handy since I’m already using that to some extent.

I don’t know that I blogged about this, but a few months ago I switched phones. I went from a Treo 650 (I loved it!) to a Razr V3i. Yeah, I know they aren’t really the same type of phone, but I was assigned a Blackberry for work, and I didn’t want to carry two PDA phones. So I went for a nice slim phone that slips easily in and out of pockets and has the features I want strictly for my phone: 1.2 MP camera, bluetooth, storage, and quad band. I got all that and more in my V3i, in a nice small package. So I use the Crackberry for PDA stuff, since I manage all of that via Outlook/Exchange, it’s all synchronized.
I bought the phone from a feller on eBay – a Canadian feller. And as it turns out, the phone was branded for Rogers. Meh. All this time I haven’t been able to browse the net (which is ok since work pays for it on me Crackberry), but most importantly, I haven’t been able to send or receive picture messages. Well, no longer!
Yesterday I passed a T-Mobile store, and happened to walk in and ask since I remembered – they said to call TMo customer service and they will send the settings to the phone. I called them up, and bam, after 20 minutes, I can now send (and receive!) picture mail. Which means more phontograph blogging – so I know you’ll be happy to hear that.
